INVESTING DIFFERENTLY IN LIGHT DESIGN
Designers LIGHT WITHOUT BORDERS is a humanitarian association established in 2007. It brings together over 50 volunteers in the world, from the lighting sector. The association has adopted a political line and an ethical charter. It is prohibited including interference in the activity of local people, to serve the private interests or proselytism. DESIGNERS LIGHT WITHOUT BORDERS is a member of the LUCI association.
Transfer knowledge in respect of local cultures
After the earthquake that hit Haiti on January 10th, LDWB’s branch in Belgium, led by Isabelle Corten, got in touch with several groups created to help the country. Lighting Designers Without Borders could take part in the projects presented by two Belgian NGOs: Fokal (promoting knowledge) and Quartiers pour Haiti (construction specialists).
Between 2008 and 2010, Lighting Designers Without Borders has led its first mission. This mission was launched at the request of Énergie du Mali (EDM), electrity supplier of the country. It consisted in setting up a training and consulting program for EDM’s technicians and engineers from Bamako and Timbuktu.
As a member of LUCI association, LDWB takes part in a project led by the city of Glasgow (UK) for Amathole district (East London, South Africa) as part of the Light Links contest organized by LUCI and Thorn Lighting, specialist of industrial lighting systems. This contest allows one city from a wealthy country to volunteer and provide help to a disadvantaged city and realize an urban lighting project.
LIGHTING DESIGN PROCESS
8 Steps of lighting design project
Light can take an immaterial and symbolic dimension in the heart of darkness and can become full of meaning.
The action of light Designers Without Borders is not about emergency aid, but falls within humanitarian actions by giving priority to lasting solutions.
